Swimming On My Own

When I was little, my family would take frequent trips during the summer to my grandparents to swim in their pool which was circular and above-ground. By that time, I still was too young to swim on my own and also didn’t know how to. Thus I had to wear a kind of floaty bathing suit to keep me surfaced.
I didn’t like going into the pool and would always cry as I wanted to get out every time my parents put me in the water. I would end up just playing with my toys on the pool deck while everybody else swam.
However I had no problem running through the water on the beach shores likely because the water couldn’t be able to go over my head.
Once my family and I moved next-door to my grandparents we begin going over there more frequently. It wasn’t until I was five going to six was when I finally learned how to swim in the pool by myself after getting off of a pool raft in the water. In the years that followed I continued to swim on my own and eventually began really enjoying the activity.
Looking back I feel like the reason why swimming started so stressful for me was probably because I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t touch the bottom and floated around aimlessly. Once I learned to properly swim that changed.
To this day I still enjoy swimming in deep-water areas and also like to go canoeing as a hobby.
